Tips for protecting your home
Before You Leave
- Leave a key with a trusted friend.
- Store valuables in a safe deposit box.
- Tell a neighbor you trust your departure and return dates.
Supply an itinerary with phone numbers where you can be reached in an emergency.
- Ask police if they have a "vacation home check" program.
- Lock all windows and doors. Double check basement and garage doors before you leave.
You're ready to go.....
- Carry little cash. Use traveler's checks.
- Keep careful tabs on your money. Carry it in a front pocket next to your body.
- If you are driving, plan your route carefully, travel on main roads, and use maps.
Have your car serviced and tires checked before leaving.
- Don't share your plans with strangers.
- ALWAYS lock your car when it's parked. Keep your valuables out of sight.
- NEVER pick up hitchhikers.
- If you stop overnight, remove bags and valuable from the car.
- If your car breaks down, turn on your flashers, raise the hood, and wait for a
patrolman.
- Carry a flashlight with extra batteries, and a first aid kit.
- Try to avoid traveling at night if you can.
